Few things are as debilitating as the pain from a severe toothache. Pain medications may help, but they are a temporary solution. And if that cause is infected nerve tissue, true relief may only come from a root canal. Leaving it to fester is both painful and dangerous.
What Happens During a Root Canal
After the patient is made comfortable, a tiny hole is drilled into the tooth so that the inflamed tissue can be removed and the remaining tissue cleaned. Since we’re dealing with an infection, medications are typically used to prevent the problem from spreading.
Once the area is clean, the tooth is filled with a dental-safe material and capped with a dental crown or filling…and voila! The procedure is finished and the often searing pain from the toothache is replaced by just a little bit of temporary very minor and controllable discomfort for the first few days after the procedure.
How Long Do the Results of a Root Canal Last?
Provided that the patient practices great dental hygiene and visits their dentist for checkups and regular preventive care, the results of a root canal should last indefinitely. Complications from root canals are fairly rare and highly treatable in the rare instances they occur.
